Why Galvanizing Specifications Need to Be Clear
When purchasing galvanized steel brackets, a description such as “hot-dip galvanized” may not provide all the information required for a project.
Buyers may also need to define the applicable standard, coating acceptance criteria, inspection method and documentation requirements.
These details help the buyer and manufacturer understand what needs to be supplied and how compliance will be assessed.
Understanding the Applicable Standard
ISO 1461:2022 specifies general requirements and test methods for hot-dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles. It covers matters including coating properties, appearance, thickness and inspection.
Australian and New Zealand projects may reference AS/NZS 4680. Buyers should confirm the edition specified by their project and the requirements applicable to the particular product. AS/NZS 4680:2025 is listed as the successor to the earlier 2006 edition in standards catalogues.
A standard reference should not be treated as proof of compliance by itself. The actual product and its inspection records need to meet the applicable requirements.
How Is Zinc Coating Thickness Measured?
A magnetic coating thickness gauge is commonly used to measure zinc coating thickness without damaging the finished product.
However, one measurement alone may not be sufficient to establish compliance. The applicable specification determines the required coating criteria, sampling and assessment method.
For custom brackets, buyers should consider:
- The applicable standard and product category
- The base steel material and thickness
- The specified coating thickness or other acceptance criteria
- The inspection locations and sampling requirements
- The required inspection records or certificates
Coating thickness should not be specified using a universal value without checking the applicable standard and product requirements.
What Information Should Be Included in an RFQ?
For a custom galvanized component, provide:
- The product drawing and dimensions.
- The steel grade and material thickness.
- The required galvanizing standard and edition.
- Any additional coating or appearance requirements.
- The required inspection records and documentation.
- The order quantity and intended application.
Clear requirements make it easier to review a quotation and compare offers from different suppliers.
