Choosing a Manufacturing Partner Is About More Than Price
When sourcing custom pergola brackets and timber connectors from China, price is an important consideration. However, buyers also need to understand the supplier’s manufacturing capabilities, technical communication, quality controls and ability to meet the product specification.
A suitable manufacturing partner should be able to explain how the product will be made and how the agreed requirements will be checked.
Here are five areas worth reviewing before placing an order.
1. Check the Actual Manufacturing Capabilities
Start by identifying the processes required for your product.
Depending on the design, these may include:
- Laser cutting
- Punching and forming
- Press brake bending
- Welding and assembly
- Surface treatment
- Inspection and packing
Ask which operations are performed in-house and which are handled by external partners.
Outsourcing a specialist process does not automatically make a supplier unsuitable. What matters is whether the production arrangement is transparent and the required quality controls are in place.
2. Review Experience with Custom Drawings
A supplier should be able to understand your drawings and identify technical details that need clarification.
Look for evidence of experience with similar components, such as product photographs, manufacturing examples and explanations of the processes involved.
For a new product, discuss drawing review, sample production and approval before mass production.
3. Understand the Surface Treatment Requirements
For outdoor metal components, corrosion protection may be an important part of the product specification.
If your brackets require hot-dip galvanizing, confirm the applicable standard, coating requirements and inspection arrangements.
ISO 1461:2022 covers hot-dip galvanized coatings on fabricated iron and steel articles, while other products and project specifications may require different or additional provisions. The relevant standard should be confirmed for the actual product.
Do not rely on a general statement such as “high-quality galvanizing.” Ask what the supplier can demonstrate for your specific order.
4. Ask How Quality Is Controlled
Before placing an order, discuss how the supplier will check critical dimensions and other important features.
Questions worth asking include:
- How are drawing revisions controlled?
- Which dimensions will be inspected?
- Can samples be checked before mass production?
- How are surface treatment requirements verified?
- What inspection records can be provided?
- How are issues handled if a product does not meet the agreed specification?
The appropriate answers will depend on the product, order requirements and supplier’s actual quality system.
5. Consider Long-Term Supply Requirements
For importers and distributors, the first order is only one part of the relationship.
You may also need consistent specifications across repeat orders, suitable export packaging, reliable communication and the ability to support product adjustments as your business develops.
Discuss expected annual quantities and future product plans early, particularly when a project involves tooling or product development.
